Understanding the Internet: The Global Digital Tapestry
The Internet is a collection of millions of individual computers and their owners who can communicate with each other. It started in 1969 as a private military system in the U.S. but is public and worldwide today.
The immense size of the Internet will stagger you – in 2024, 5.3 billion users. Those people all have computers and smartphones and use the internet for many purposes, which I’ll mention later.
Due to the size of the Internet, you can imagine that to respect people’s privacy, there are many rules and regulations called protocols. The Internet is becoming safer and safer by the minute as IT experts and robots work against the clock to ensure security and privacy.
The Significance of a Digital ID in Today’s World
On the Internet, it is essential that you have your own identity and that it is kept private and secure. There are hackers (often teenagers) who spend all their time trying to steal identities from the internet.
You will create a unique Internet address for your website once it is published or ‘live,’ and this where your potential customers will come to see what you are offering. To enter the back office of your website, you will require a password, just like your house’s locks, keys, and security alarms, so you can develop it. Your computer will also have a unique address and various protections, so it is entirely private. Building what is known as a firewall around your website and PC is possible so that no one can enter unless you permit them to do so.
You will need strong internet surfing credentials, just like you need a travel permit/visa and passport when traveling in person to confirm your identity. These credentials will ensure that you carefully manage your website and online business. They are your online presence and digital identity for the future.
Personal Branding: Crafting Your Digital Presence
Just as shops and department stores have assistants with personalities to look after their customers, you will need an image that people can remember on the internet. Photographs of you or, if you prefer, avatars (caricatures) will build your ID (identity) and help your customers to get to know and trust you.
Your business also needs a memorable ID, so you will create a logo – a symbol or small design – to help potential customers remember your company. Logos are fun. I can show you exactly how to make them. Have a look at some of the examples below and for First-Hand Life at the top of the page which I designed.
Once you have created a logo or badge for your website/company, there are many strategies to help the global internet community get to know it, too. One of these strategies involves S.E.O. (Search Engine Optimization) because robots constantly crawl around the internet and check that everything follows the regulations. They reward websites that obey by placing them at the top of the search results so that customers can type a keyword into the internet and find your site with answers to their questions.
Securing Your Spot in the Digital Landscape
Like every computer, smartphone, and tablet has a unique address to identify them, so it is with every single file, folder, and image we create on the Internet. They are called URLs (Uniform Resource Locator). This means we can find any file, folder or image we like if we have the URL. It’s like GPS on our car or phone. If we have an address, we can follow the directions to get to that place even if we’ve never been there before.
Google – a famous name nowadays – dominates the Internet, regulating and controlling the ethical use of airwaves. They have many search engines – robots – to enforce their rules and give rewards as I mentioned earlier. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) means designing our articles/posts/images according to the rules to the optimum extreme.
If you please the Search Engines, Google guarantees that your website and brand will be displayed prominently when people search for information. You will learn how to follow the rules while writing quality articles – known as Content Creation.
Effective Communication Through Emails and Web Presence
You will also create a free email account in your name with a unique address. This means you can receive data and messages directly and reply to them to enhance your business communication. Perhaps you have used SMS or Social Media like Line, Facebook, etc., to communicate with friends until now. Business communications need a more sophisticated system than that.
You must choose a good company to provide and manage your email and correspondence efficiently. There are many other ways to communicate with internet business colleagues and customers, too, so that you can reach out and give a personal touch to the members of your growing network.
Embarking on the Entrepreneurial Journey Online
You are about to become an Internet Entrepreneur. What a mouthful! Entrepreneur is a glamourous word for someone who jumps at business opportunities and wants success. You will join the millions of other website owners in a rapidly expanding digital marketplace.
This is our challenge. Make your website stand out with its originality and beautiful, easily accessed design in a sea of millions of others. You can see that your digital Identity is crucial to making this a success, and your idea and your audience will be all yours.

Hi Linden,
I just read through your post “Create Your Digital ID For The Future” on First-Hand Life. You’ve covered the essentials – from the importance of a digital ID to personal branding and securing your online presence. However, the discussion seems to orbit around a more tech-savvy audience. For those less familiar with the digital world, like seniors or digital newcomers, how can they approach creating a digital ID without feeling overwhelmed by the technicalities? Do you have tips for making this process more accessible and less harsh for them?
Thank you for your work and sharing this helpful guide!
Warm regards,
Makhsud
Dear Makhsud,
That is a good observation! Digital = technical in the minds of people with no/little screen exposure, in my experience. It’s their greatest hurdle, so I cover other aspects of creating a Digital ID in several other posts. I have quite a lot of experience with those without experience and found that their minds can’t grasp the concepts, e.g. the cloud, hard drive, saving files, etc. So, I am designing an online course to help such people grasp abstract concepts.
I wrote this post and others on this website to help the overwhelm before they join Wealthy Affiliate – the perfect platform to take care of them. It’s exciting to be the first to help bring people face-to-face with the astounding Internet! In their second-hand life, they were perhaps merely observers of others with technical skills but considered them nothing to do with their own lives because they were sacrificed for others.
I think this is one of my missions. I’m bringing my many years as a mindful educator to bear on this issue. I believe every human should have basic IT skills because this is the future for us all. We must be inclusive.
Blessings, and thanks for reminding me to finish my online course introducing virgins to IT. SO much educating to do!!
in loving kindness
